Frequently Asked Questions

How long does my hair need to be to start locs?

It really depends on the method of choice when starting. Ideally, all of your hair needs to be at least 1.5 inches to start comb coils – meaning that the shortest areas of your hair needs to be at least 1.5 inches. Slightly longer hair is needed for alternative methods such as: crochet, back-combing, interlock, 2 strand.

How long does my hair need to be to start dreadlocks with extensions?

Your hair needs to be between 2-3 inches long throughout, in order to start locs with extensions. Anything less is subject to slippage/detachment. Anything more may be discarded (if you have long hair keep this in mind).

Why are my extensions slipping/falling out?

Once properly installed, although it may not look it, your locs are in a fragile state especially at the site of attachment. Excessive tugging, styling, pulling of the locs can encourage them to loosen before a secure bond can be established with time. Over-use of oils and hair products can also weaken the loc. Just because they look sturdy doesn’t mean you should treat them recklessly. Don’t do anything to your extensions that you wouldn’t do to your own natural hair. Extensions are created with Human Hair…you can damage them and they WILL break/fall out. Keep your hands out of your head as directed!

How often should I do loc maintenance or retwist?

You should maintain your locs every 4-6 weeks or as needed. But don’t over twist!

How often should I wash my hair?

You should wash your hair at least once a month or as needed depending on your lifestyle/activity level.

What shampoo should I use to wash my locs?

In order to avoid residue forming on your dreads, you should be using a residue free shampoo followed by a moisturizing shampoo. How often you wash is dependent on your lifestyle and activity level.

I have dandruff, what should I use to remove them?

The best is to wash your hair more often (at least every 3-4 days) with a medicated/dandruff shampoo. I know I know…You just got a retwist! But, the choice is yours: Healthy scalp or Fly hair w/a jacked up scalp?

We can’t permanently get rid of dandruff as, once we’ve got dandruff, it’s for life. It will come and go depending on stress, fatigue, hair care products and so on. Using a dandruff shampoo more often will help with the issue. If issues persist consult a Dermatologist/Trichologist.

Do you do Caucasian hair?

Yes I can start locs and maintain them using a crochet needle.

I have just started my locs, how can I care for them?

Here are a few tips to start your loc journey:

  • Wash your hair at least once a month with a clarifying shampoo. Clean hair promotes locing.

  • Sea salt is awesome to help maturing locs. Don’t hesitate to go to the beach! Rinse your hair with tap water after going to the sea.

  • Maintain your locs every 4-6 weeks or as needed, but dont overtwist!

  • Avoid using use wax or conditioner on your locs initially as it will leave residue buildup and start smelling and conditioner will delay the locing process in preventing the tangling needed to encourage the locing process.

  • Completely dry your locs after washing them to avoid mold.

  • Do a deep cleanse followed by a deep condition 3-4 times a year. Especially if you are a heavy product user.

  • Tie your hair down at bedtime with a satin/silk wrap or bonnet.
